Cobalt Magnets Are Both Beautiful And Powerful

Cobalt magnets are one of two rare earth magnets. They are made of an alloy of cobalt and samarium. They are the second strongest permanent magnet, perform at very high temperatures, and are resistant to corrosion. On the downside, they are very expensive to produce and the price fluctuates with the availability of cobalt. While they are able to withstand very high operating temperatures, they are also very brittle and prone to cracking and chipping. Cobalt magnets are resistant to external demagnetization.

Cobalt magnets are used extensively in the aerospace industry where cost is not so much a factor as is performance. Fender guitars and basses use them as a noiseless pickup. Other uses include high end electric motors for slot car racing and traveling wave tubes. A traveling wave tube is used to amplify radio frequency signals.

Other types of magnets called cobalt magnets may refer to the bright blue color used in designs for refrigerator magnets. We have all seen the brilliant blue and white patterns on cobalt pottery and dishes. Many of these designs are reproduced on refrigerator magnets. Before the 1900’s, cobalt was primarily used in the production of glass or a dye in ancient cultures. Cobalt glass has a distinct blue color.

The manufacture of cobalt magnets starts with cobalt and samarium being in a powdered form. The magnets are pressed and shaped in a rigid mold and magnetized after they are formed. They require a huge magnetic field to magnetize them and it may restrict the design of the magnet or magnetic assembly. Because they require very specialized equipment to magnetize them, they are seldom magnetized by the customer. The manufacturing process results in a single direction of magnetization and this is often marked after final assembly by a laser mark or dot.

Cobalt magnets can be used in making therapeutic jewelry, but due to the expense it is usually found in very high end jewelry where corrosion resistence is important. Other rare earth magnets are used in therpeutic mattress pads and spot treament magnets applied with adhesive pads. Cobalt has also been used in radiotherapy for the treatment of tumors. It has a tendency to produce dust, so protection from scatter contamination is essential.
